Big events happening here!!

So, the last week has been awesome. First, Carter has learned to ride his bike without training wheels! And it only took less than 5 hours, spread out over 3 days. Ashley and I are very proud of him. If all goes well over the rest of the summer, he might be racing BMX by next spring, if not sooner.

Second big event, Cameron has been doing awesome with potty training everyday. Fewer and fewer accidents as we go along. We will be very happy when we don't have to deal with diapers any more! Also, she threw away her binkie last night. We got to the point of only letter her have it at nap and bed time for about a month. Last night we asked her if she was done with it and she said yes, maybe not really knowing what was going to happen. Then we told her if she was done with binkie, to throw it in the trash, and she did!!! We thought for sure she would have a hard time going to sleep without it, but she was out after a few minutes and didn't cry for it once.

Third on the list, Ashley and I both got a chance to take aptitude tests for Reynolds & Reynolds this week. After the test, I was called in for an interview, but Ash was not. But I am not going to hold my breath on it until they call us to say we got the job or not. We are hoping to get this job though, at least for me if not both of us. My body will appreciate it.

Number four, speaking of the possible new job, I have been on a leave of absence from work since July 11th because of a seizure I had a couple months ago. So I am off until November 11th, 2011 unless I have another seizure before then. My body really needed the break because I have been feeling so worn out trying to work hard in a warehouse that has an interior temp 5-10 degrees higher than outside. Today I have a second EEG at 9:45am, and it should tell the doctors what's going on in my brain. So, wish me luck!

So, I went to the Dr. on Friday . . .

What was supposed to be just a visit to find out what's causing all of my pain turned into an afternoon in the ER. At the Dr., she decided it would be good to take some blood for testing, which is good for me too. I want to get to the bottom of this pain issue. Well, I didn't realize how much blood was to be taken until the nurse brought in a tray with 8 vials in it. OH MY! Well, I never had any problem with giving my blood before, so I didn't think anything of it. I was doing ok until about the 6th vial when I was starting to feel a little dizzy and light headed. Next thing I know, as she finished the 8th one, I was out cold and having a seizure, from what my wife, the Dr. and the nurses said. I woke up on the floor, but still knew where I was.

To be safe they called the medics in to take me to the ER and make sure it was not something terrible. After sitting in the ER for about 4-5 hours, the Dr. there concluded that what I had was a vasovagal syncope, which is more fainting and a tightening of the muscles similar to a seizure, or at least that was my understanding. It was probably due to just having so much blood drawn at one time.

So, now I have to wait until tomorrow to find out what's going to happen now. And I might have to quit my job and find something else less strenuous on my body as part of the solution to the pain. The bad thing is, all the jobs I have ever worked have been some what active in one way or another. So, my options may be limited, especially without a A.S.S. or B.A. in some professional field. I wouldn't have a problem going back to school, but how would I pay our bills? Again, not many options. I wanted to get into hotels and tourism, but here in Dayton, there isn't too much open in that area, unless I wanted to be a janitor or in housekeeping. Which neither would be able to support my family at the rate they pay.

Oh well, we'll see what tomorrow brings. Wish me luck!

An End To The Rain???

Might actually be a break in the weather! I can finally get the yard mowed, maybe lol. That is if it still isn't a huge swamp by Saturday.

So, where's the Ark?

With all this rain we've had, I'm beginning to wonder if we should start building an Ark and gather up some animals. This is getting crazy. The worst part is the grass is almost knee high in some places or the yard is a swamp and any day I have off that I'm not laid up in pain, it's raining heavy. With my work schedule, I only have 3 days open to mow, so I don't have many options.

Things like this make me wish we were full-timers, lol.

New Family Member

I am slacking in my blog posts as you can see. We have a new member of the family. This new member is a 15 week old Ragdoll kitten. He was 12 weeks old when we got him, and is nam\
d Gibbs, after Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS.

On the way to work

So, as I'm driving into work today, I just couldn't stop thinking how awesome it would be to just hop in an RV, pick a spot on the map and just go. I personally would have no problem picking the family up and go where ever the road takes us. Then, if we get bored with where we were, pick another spot on the map and move on.

Now, I know fuel prices are through the roof, but I don't think that would be a good enough reason not to do it. Honestly, the only real barrier we have is no RV. So even if we wanted to, we couldn't do anything now.

If we were to do it, and become full-time RVers, I would want to homeschool the kids. I want to do that anyway, and this would be even more reason to do it. The only issue would be they wouldn't have many friends except maybe other families we might become friends with. And that wouldn't be so bad, meeting different people from around the USA. I have read a few blogs from full-time familes and I wish that was us.

Another issue I thought of though, Ash and Cameron are homebodies, although Sis seems to want to go "bye-bye" more often. Who knows, maybe that would change if we could at least try full-timing for a summer or even a year. We would need some income during that time but there are always opportunities to make money either taking a short term job in the area you camp or working at the campground, etc.

Oh well, maybe my dream will come true. We'll just have to see what God has planned.

It's Been a While

So, I haven't posted much on here in forever and I wish I had. I have so many thought's and ideas that go in and out of my head that I need to document them somehow and maybe get some feedback from others. Plus, I wouldn't end up writing such long posts that people would lose interest in within 5 minutes, lol.

The problem is though, with my new work schedule, I pretty much sleep, get ready to go to work, work, then come home, shower and sleep before doing it all over again. I used to be on a 8 hour, 5 day a week schedule, but since volume was down from last year, we changed to 10 hours, 4 days a week. On one hand, it's awesome because I get 3 days off, but on the other, during the week, I am too exhausted to spend time with the family, and after last week, I have been so worn out I haven't felt like doing much more than vegging out, lol. So, I have either been on the computer, watching TV, or reading while watching the kids play. I've been giving them my attention, but I still don't feel like I get much "time" with the family. And since Ashley has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and before then, she hasn't been feeling like doing much either, but everyday.

And you know, I like my job as a Walmart orderfiller since it keeps me active and the day goes by quickly, and the pay is much better than anything I could get in Dayton. Which leads to the issues I have with the job now, after 8 months. Don't get me wrong, the incentives we get, free lunches for meeting certain goals, and other "perks" are nice, but like most jobs, there are some down sides. First, my body is just not doing well with it, and the doctor says I need to find something less strenuous or I'll be in real bad shape in a short time. Second, the DC is an hour away, so the time spent getting to and from work is taken away from my family time, and since I'm driving my in-laws Suburban, fuel is costing me over $125 a week. And third, Walmart insurance, for lack of a better/nicer word, sucks! I might have been better off getting on a plan through an agent instead of through the company.

All of this has me wishing, like everyone else in America, that I could make a decent living doing work from home. I have about a million ideas, but they all require a major source of capitol, building facilities, or improving on the skills I have but I don't have time to do. I would need to find something to do that would continually earn about $20.00 an hour for 40 hours a week on average.

Things that I have thought of doing include:
  • Buying cars at auctions, fixing them up then selling them - but with this economy, not many would sell as quickly as I need and I can only sell 5 in 12 months before I'd need a dealer license. So, the vehicles would need a much higher resale value.
  • Call me what you will, but I like baking and I thought I could sell baked goods through places like Etsy and various bake sales. But after some research, I found hat I would pretty much have to build a second kitchen in the house that no one and no pets go into besides me. I would love to specialize in "healthy desserts".
  • I started doing graphic design work on invitations and announcements a couple years ago and thought I could do that. But so did hundreds of other home based workers that have way more graphic design experience than I do, and 100's more designs ready to sell. I have about 15, lol.
  • Lately, I thought I could build small animal housing using recycled materials and cull lumber from lumber yards. This is still possible, if the demand is there. But, I haven't made a sale yet since I don't have anything built for examples, just designs in my head.
  • To go along with the small animal housing, I thought about raising livestock. I'd love to help my family become more self sufficient and save us money on our grocery bill. Then I wouldn't have to try to make so much money, at least a few hundred less a month. But, we plan to move some time soon if we either build or find the right house.
  • I also tried being a handyman, but that defeats the purpose of working from home. That just makes me self-employed, lol.
Now, I hate being negative about all of those things, but it's hard when there seem to be so many barriers in the way.
My final thoughts in this looooooong post is this, I would love to have my family and I become full-time RVers and travel the lower 48, seeing new places, doing new things, meeting different people, and teaching our kids about history and important life skills by example, not just some book. I'm so sure about homeschooling our kids that any talk of public and private schools has me space out, lol. Besides, it's what God wants us to do!

Well, I feel better now that I got that off of my chest. Now maybe things will be clearer and I can sleep tonight. We'll see.

God bless you for reading and I hope you practice J.O.Y. - Putting Jesus first, others second, yourself last. Lord knows I'm still working on that.

Patty Cake, Patty Cake, Baker's McManaman. . . What?

So, Ashley and I were out grocery shopping at Dorothy Lane Market, and we were looking at cakes for Carter's birthday party this weekend. We were talking about cakes and looking at all of the treats in the bakery and I have been inspired to try some baking and pastry making. Maybe become the next Duff. I wanted to make Carter's cake, but I don't have enough time to do what I had planned. So, we had to order one. Maybe I'll make Cameron's cake this year. Who knows.

Lost Dog - Please Help!

Our dog took off today and we need everyone's help to find him. If you know what Charlie looks like, great! If not, he's a 5 yr. old full blood 15in. beagle, white, red and brown with a 3-4" white stripe across his back and tattoo markings inside his ears. If you can help or find him please let us know.

Just for the record. . . .

I thoroughly dislike mowing the grass! That is all. . . . . . . hahaha!

Well, yesterday was the first mow of the year for us, and I cut all 5 acres. Well, it actually took 2 days to do and I finished today. The first cut seems to always be the most involved, especially when your front 2 acres are filled with trees, downed branches and EXTRA high grass over the septic leach bed, and the rear 3 acres are overgrown from not cutting all year in '09. It took me the better part of 6 hours to cut the back yard and back 40 of our property, and then another hour to cut the front yard.

Today took a couple hours longer than usual though because the belt came off of the mower deck in the middle of mowing. And it didn't help that the deck was fill with grass that had to be pulled out. So, I pulled the deck off to clean it out and in the process, I find that all 3 blades are extremely dull. I would have been better off trying to cut the grass with the back side of a butter knife! I put everything back together though after doing a little filing on the blades and got the yard done.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I AM FRIED! I got burnt to a crisp. Silly me didn't put on sunscreen or any thing, so now my arms, face, head and the tops of my knees are as red as the paint on our Troy Built mower. Not fun times at all. Oh well, I got a good base for our Myrtle Beach trip in a couple weeks. Can't wait for that!

Well, that's all for my rant about mowing. I hope you all have better luck, and a smaller yard, than I!

C-ya!

Getting Back Into BMX

So, I posted a link to my page on Hookit.com, but didn't really explain the situation. For the last few years, I have been wanting to get back into BMX racing but have not had the time to train or get in better shape to ride. Before that I didn't have a bike anymore. Now I have a bike, a DK General Lee, that I got for my birthday 2 years ago. And Ashley and I have started going to Five Seasons to help loose weight and get in to better shape. So, now that I am starting to get more "spare" time, I can get some practice in and learn a few of the racing skills I have forgotten over the last 16 years. It's amazing what you can forget in that time, especially things that were pretty much second nature. Like something as simple as jumping, manuals or even a bunny hop. Easy stuff when you're half my age.

Yesterday, I thought I'd work on some starting sprints. Seemed simple enough to pedal at 80-90% power for about 100'. Well, the first attempt went well. I got a good start and felt pretty good. The second, not so much. After the second pedal, I either leaned to far forward or hit a stick and bailed, hitting my left knee hard on the driveway and dragging my pedal up my right leg. Kind of put an end to my practice session. So, before I went to sleep I was pricing knee/shin and elbow pads.

Today, I thought about riding a little after I got done working, but that's about as far as I got. My knee is still a little sore, but OK and not bruised. My leg is looking pretty bad, but little to no pain.

You would think at almost 34 years old I would have better sense than to try to get back into a sport better suited for kids half my age and younger.

Carter's 3rd Birthday Party

This past weekend was Carter's 3rd birthday party, held at Rolandia/Magic Castle. Everyone had a great time, especially Carter! Pizza, cake, presents and arcade games, what more could he need. He got a lot of neat presents, but probably his favorite is the Imaginarium train table with some Thomas wooden trains.

Here are some pictures from the party and at home afterwards.

So, until the next post, God Bless!

Still Learning Our Camera

Well, it's been about 10 days since getting our camera and I have been trying to absorb as much about photography and digital cameras, especially our, since our T1i arrived. And just when I thought I read and learned enough to start photographing the things I want to shoot, I find some video on YouTube, or a blog, or some other website with a bunch more information I never knew about.

Some videos I have been watching are from Bryan Peterson (YouTube - ppsop2009's Channel) , Rick Sammons (http://www.youtube.com/user/pixelmagic), CameraLabs.com (http://www.youtube.com/user/cameralabs) and PhotoClassPro (http://www.youtube.com/user/PhotoClassPro). These so far have been the most informative YouTube videos. If you are new to photography, or just looking for different techniques, I would suggest looking into these videos.

As far as websites go, my bookmark list has grown exponentially just in the last two weeks. So you can see where I've been, here are a list of some of the websites. Feel free to check them out!

As you can see, I have probably let myself get consumed with this subject, which can be good or bad. It's good because I can possibly turn this hobby into a source of income in the future, and it will make me and Ashley better photog's. It's bad because I have spent a lot of (maybe too much) time online or in books reading instead of paying more attention to my wife and kids. Hopefully to former will pay off and support the latter. In other words, I hope we can in fact make at least a part time "business" out of photography and help pay for activities and vacations with the family.

On a side note, we have all been sick, so we haven't been in the mood or able to go take more pictures lately, but we are all finally getting over our illnesses and will hopefully be out shooting soon.

So, until the next post, God Bless.

Some cropping in Photoshop Camera Raw

Here is a picture Ashley took tonight of the barn, at dusk. The snow was falling and she was trying to capture that. The other 2 are the same picture cropped and made black and white and sepia tone, both with vignetting. Enjoy!

More Pictures From the New Camera

Here are some more pictures from the new camera. These were croped and adjusted using Adobe Photoshop and the Camera Raw plug-in.

Camera Arrived Today!

Today was a happy day! UPS came knocking on our door this morning with gifts. Our camera, printer and other equipment got here and man are we excited. We just spent about 2-4 hours reading the manual and trying things out on our new Canon EOS Rebel T1i dSLR. Since all Ash and I have ever really had for a camera were point-and-shoot cameras, this is deffinately the best we've ever had. We can't get over how sharp the pictures are with just basic settings and not really fine tuning anything. It's taking some getting used to the use of a view finder instead of just an LCD screen, or not having the option of a view finder I should say. We haven't tried much with the live view yet, but I'm sure that will come soon enough.

Well, here a couple of our first shots! We took over 60 in about a 30 minute period!

New Camera Equipment Purchase!

This weekend, Ashley and I finally had the opportunity to buy a "real" digital camera. I think we've spent at least 3-6 months searching for the camera that would best fit us, and I have to say, it's almost like buying a new car if you aren't sure of what's out there.

What we decided on was a Canon EOS Rebel T1i DSLR kit. We had suggestions from friends and other people who do photography for either a living or just a hobby, and most of them came back for either a Nikon or a Canon. Some suggestions were for the more pricey cameras the pro's use, others were more in our price range. At first we had decided on the Canon XSi, but after further consideration went with the T1i instead. We really wanted a camera that would be great for getting pic's of the kids and family events, some sports and auto racing, railroad pictures and other shots that just cannot be done well with a point-and-shoot. We are done with the grainy, out of focus, poor quality shots we get with our Sony p-n-s. It has done it's job over the last 2 years we have had it, but it is not the best for action shots that are required when you have a 3 year old and a 7 month old.

Also with the camera we ordered some accessories. First is a dedicated flash from Vivitar and a mini softbox/light diffuser from Dot Line. We also got a UV filter to help protect the lens. For a memory card we picked up a SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 8GB card. And to carry everything around we chose a Canon backpack style bag that has enough room for all of our stuff and space to spare. And as an added bonus, there was a $400.00 rebate on a Canon Pixma P9000 printer, so we ordered it as well. And the cool thing about the printer rebate is that we are paying $446.00 before the rebate. So we get the printer for $46.00 and change.

Now, where are we buying all of this photographic awesomeness? A place in New York City called B&H Photo and Video. Of all of the places we shopped locally and online for what we wanted, B&H had the best prices and deals, and the people are great to deal with. At least the 2 Ash and I dealt with were. So we strongly recommend you check them out if you're in the market for photo and video equipment.

Also, we were recommended a couple books, or I should say an author, that are very informative and keep things light, without bogging you down with digi-cam techie jargon. The author is Scott Kelby and the books are called "The Digital Photography Books, Vol. 1-3". We got ours on loan from the library, but we will probably buy them later on down the road. Maybe when a book store has a sale or we get a coupon. Another book we were told to get was the "Rebel T1i for Dummies". This one we did buy since it was camera specific and we needed all the help learning this thing that we can get.

So, by Wednesday, the 10th, UPS should be knocking at our door with our equipment, as long as there isn't a delay because of the snow over the weekend. I'll eventually post some info and our thoughts on the camera after we play around with it for a few days.

Wish us luck, or pray for us, lol.

Cameron Bailee Is Here!

She's here! Cameron Bailee was born on July 6th, 2009 at 9:42am. 7lbs. 13oz. and 21 1/2" long. We are very excited to have her home now. She'll be 2 weeks old tomorrow. I haven't been on a good sleep pattern since I want to let my wife get as much rest as possible, and I've stayed up all night with the baby, watching her sleep.

Carter is excited to have his baby sister here too. He always wants to hug and kiss her. He's doing very well for a 2 year old. But the last week or so, he's been sick with a virus, so we've had to keep them separated.

Going to Archiver's Tomorrow!!

For my wife's birthday, she's getting a massage at Becomming Mom in Mason tomorrow. And it just so happens there is an Archiver's in the same complex. Ash also got some gift cards, so they will probably get spent on tools, maybe.
